ThreadCast: Google Chat notifications for Jira, one thread per issue

Coming soonFree to 10 users (planned)Runs on Forge

ThreadCast is a Jira Cloud app that sends issue updates to Google Chat spaces as tidy cards, with every update to an issue in that issue's own thread. Choose the events, filter by status or JQL, and send a test in seconds. There is no Google sign-in and no bot to install: a project admin pastes a Google Chat incoming-webhook URL. It is built on Atlassian Forge and has no servers of its own. It is not yet on the Atlassian Marketplace.

Who it is for

Teams that run Jira Cloud and talk in Google Chat, and are tired of noisy or broken notifications. Typical users: support and operations teams who want only "Done" or high-priority updates in a space, and engineering teams who want each issue's history in one thread.

What it does

  • Each card shows the issue key, summary, status, assignee, priority and an "Open in Jira" button.
  • All updates to one issue go to the same Google Chat thread, so a space does not become a wall of noise.
  • Per-project event choice, status filter and JQL filter such as priority in (High, Highest) or labels = customer.
  • "Send test message" confirms the webhook works before you rely on it.

Quick start

  1. In Google Chat, open a space → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhook, and copy the URL.
  2. In Jira, open Project settings → Google Chat notifications, paste the URL, then click Send test message.
  3. Choose which events to send. That's it.

Pricing

Planned pricing, not yet on sale. Free for teams of up to 10 users. Larger teams get a 30-day trial. Without an active subscription the app keeps working on a basic level: 1 webhook, issue-created notifications only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect Jira to Google Chat?

In Google Chat, open a space → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhook, and copy the URL. In Jira, open Project settings → Google Chat notifications, paste the URL, click Send test message, and choose which events to send.

Which events are supported?

Issue created, issue transitioned (optionally only into chosen statuses), issue assigned, comment added and priority changed. Several changes in one edit are combined into one card.

Does it work with personal Gmail accounts?

No. Incoming webhooks are a Google Workspace feature, and a Workspace admin must allow them for the space. Personal Gmail accounts cannot create webhooks.

Is it a replacement for Google's own Google Chat for Jira Cloud app?

It does the notification part. Google's app had its last release in November 2021 and is rated 2.3★ on the Marketplace; ThreadCast is a maintained, Forge-native app focused on threaded notifications.

What data leaves Jira?

Only to chat.googleapis.com, the space you configured: issue key, summary, status, assignee display name, priority, issue type, project name, a link, and on comment events up to 600 characters of comment text (can be turned off). Comments with restricted visibility are never posted, and issues with a security level are skipped by default.

How are webhook URLs stored?

Encrypted, in Forge secret storage, and never shown again after you save them. A delivery log keeps the last 50 sends for up to 14 days.

Does it still work on Hangouts Chat?

Google Chat is the current name for Hangouts Chat. ThreadCast works with Google Chat spaces.
